Ready To Tear It Up On The Drag Strip

In total, the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 was produced in just 20,302 units. Even then, that made it a pretty rare car to own. But now, after almost 50 years, the vehicle is a highly-coveted collector’s item that mostly finds its place under the sun as a garage queen, only to be taken out on the weekends. However, some owners are different. For some, using this American Muscle car in the way it is supposed to be used is all that matters.

This first-generation Chevrolet Camaro Z28 is built for the drag strip. From the pristine bodywork, all the way to the selection of high-performance upgrades, it looks like a car that received unbridled attention from its owner.

The build started with the engine. The Z28 seen here features a small-block 385ci SBC engine. It features a compression ratio of 11:1, solid roller cams, a Holley Ultra XP 750 carburetor, a complete Edelbrock Victor Jr intake and heads, Hooker headers, an MSD Billet distributor and an MSD 6AL ignition.

The engine is mated to a TKO 600 five-speed automatic gearbox, allowing for smooth and precise gear shift on the rubber padding. Paired with a Hurst Blackjack shifter for styling looks and performance in the interior.

For the suspension, the owner ensured this Camaro Z28 handles like a champ. On the front, a set of QA1 coilovers. In the rear, a Cal Trac traction bar, joined by Cal Trac Split-Mono leaf springs, Detroit Speed shocks and a mini tub. This muscle car’s stopping power comes from a set of Wilwood brakes with drilled rotors in the front, combined with CPP disc brakes in the rear. In the rear, you’ll also find Hotchkis subframe connectors. Furthermore, a rear end 12bolt posi, with a 3:73 gear is installed as well.

With a car like this, you can’t forget about safety. The interior features a six-point rollbar, a set of Recaro bucket seats and a Crow harness system. This allows the Camaro Z28 not only to tear it up on the drag strip but also, allow for some tight cornering situations to be handled with ease by both the car and the driver.

The final touch on this 1969 Camaro Z28 build is a set of WELD forged aluminum wheels. The customer went with a set of WELD Racing RT-S S76 wheels in the front, sized 15×5 and a set of WELD Racing RT Vektor wheels in the rear, with 15×10 sizes. The wheels are wrapped in a set of Mickey Thompson Sportsman SR tires, sized 26×8 and 28×12 in the front and rear, respectively.
